Beta site - North East PA Paul's "smart" controller installed on 4/18/07- inside w temp 50F, outside temp 55F- unit ran fine on startup (today) 4/23/07- Non glazed loop gives +45F above outside temp as air temp is 75F- water temp down is 120F so far : 45F x 520lbs= 23.4 k btu's per 1 hour @ 3 gpm rate = 1 roof cycle 5/4/07 -11am - heated so far 440 gal + 20dF = 3hours in tank 440gal = 3.5k lbs x 20 degrees = 70k BTU's so far by 11am ( 3 hour tank cycle ) morning sun - not peak sun -by noon tank = 80f |

weather, heat pumps are a very efficient method of heating pools. Heat
pumps do not generate heat, they simply capture it and move it from one
place to another. How efficient is a swimming pool heat pump? That's not
an easy question to answer. Heat pumps don't have a simple efficiency
number to work with. Their efficiency is measured by Coefficient of
Performance (COP). Just
like other heating options, heat pumps can have low efficiencies or high
efficiencies. Their COP can range from 3.0-7.0. The higher the number the
more efficient the heat pump. What this means is that for every unit of
electricity that you put in to run the compressor, you get 3-7 units of
heat out of the heat pump. The higher efficiency units usually use scroll
compressors versus the reciprocal compressors of the standard units.

My Research for over a yr. say that 3 gallons per min is a
good flow for solar, you must consider piping size resistance
> the length of the loop to get your figure, not just head
height when choosing a pump, a good idea after choosing your
parts and building your system is to install a flow
meter on the return to the roof, since that's the cooler side,
to check the exact flow, flow alone is not the most important
factor when tuning your system, Flow x Temp to the heat
exchange give the thermal transfer, and is the same for the
collector time to pick up the heat again. that's why you
should be able to change the flow in a Range during the day to
get 140F coming down at the slowest flow rate at the same
time, and to get 140F + down if you can at the max flow rate, the
perfect system. (1 Lb of water x 1 degree = 1 Btu)
...slow flow when the sun comes up/max flow in mid day/slow
flow heading to the evening.
Were in model T times, As most installers slap a system up and get some heat out and there down the road to the next job . its like a car without a gas peddle, crude ! No fine or medium way of changing the differences the sun hits the roof from morning to peak to dusk ! Thermal Exchange is what the solar market does, it has allot of differences during the day. Either get( min. 2 single pumps, plumb inline together ) or get one 3 speed pump and use a Auto temp watch dog controller ( is very simple to do this) to change the flow speed with the cir. pump or pumps,.... Just like a box fan you like the 3 speed control the air flow, just think water flow. Grundfos chart above spec.site spec site 2

you could install a tempering valve that would not be as good because it would add resistance to the pump when not fully open and that would cost more energy to the pump and make the pump run hotter. the controller is the best design again, but this would be a simple add on, but you will still need a temp watch dog comparator to see the temp on the roof and the storage tank and know when to come on and shut off the system. a cheap timer to set on at 9 am and off at 6pm and the tempering valve would be a start of a running system. with the 3 speed controller, this way would get the temp down to the bottom of the system faster since the software, say for the system to come on at Med speed for 5-10 minutes and then the controller to set the proper speed for the water temp coming down after that time out, and is smart after that for the full range of the day, cloudy or full sun. | with the tempering type the flow would be 1/2 rate until the tempering valve had to adjust the output temp to maintain the set temp of the tempering valve, after the full open range it would be out of range to control since it does not have control over the top window - so the tempering way would be to come on at 50% to and stay there until higher temp, but on cloudy days, it would still be at 50%, since its not a smart controller, you would not get fine tuned temp below 50% and would still have resistance against the pump for those days, not a perfect world for the pump, maybe Ariz or Florida it would not be as noticed, since the curve is better maintained in hotter areas |
It might be possible to have both in line since the pump is on low speed anyway, that should not add resistance, but could add resistance later when the pump or pumps are at full speed, if you turned the tempering valve set temp. it could add Linearity to the steps and be a fine tuner as a great outcome overall. Hope I can Research this in real time - online to see if I'm come across a terrific New Engineering Design for solar thermal., what's the sense of building a $1000 system and you don't include a $50 tempering valve in the design if it will increase the performance outcome + 10 to 15 %, not smart ! Time will tell on my research this year. |
